Why A Logo Costs More Than $100

Posted on: 02-10-2010 Posted in: Logo Design Process

When asked what I charge for my logo designs I usually get a kind response saying we will be in touch, never to hear from the person again. I think many times people don’t realize what goes into the logo design process. The above video by Brian White of TriLion Studios is a great example of what it takes to create a logo. Keep in mind he is only working on one logo concept and isn’t even showing the time it takes to generate and sketch initial ideas, meet with clients, or build a design brief. A great logo designer will not only make something that is visually eye-catching, but also conceptually sound.

It’s seems that most people do not value good conceptual design because they do not understand it. I appreciate good design because I love it, have been taught and researched it. I can’t even walk by a store without glancing at it’s logo. We have passion for it and understand how much actual work is put into one. If we could only nationally broadcast it for the world to see :)

So true Mark. When I was at school we worked on a variety of design work, but I was always most fascinated with the logo and branding projects. It amazes me to see how much time and effort can go into the simplest of logos.

I think many of the most successful logos are also some of the simplest. And I don’t think this is by accident. Great designers are able to condense everything that a client presents to them into a simple, easily recognizable logo that will stand the test of time. This is no easy feat, as you well know. ;)

Thanks for the comments guys. The video was fairly hard to produce, but totally worth it to show potential clients. It’s a little nerve wracking knowing that people are watching you while you work and not knowing if you will use the concept or not….

Just fyi, I did a pro bono mascot design and type treatment for a local elementary school last week and did the same process with the illustration. http://vimeo.com/9940057

I really do appreciate the time and effort you put into creating the video Brian. I have only done a little video work and know that it is no easy task. What you put together really does help show clients what kind of time and energy goes into the design process. I love your other video as well and the music is a great choice! Keep up the good work.

      Thanks Jeremy,

I think your design work is great. We use a comglomerate of contract designers all the time. Send me your vcard and if you are interested I can get a bid for a logo comp down the road. I will also let you know of any other videos I do in the next few months.

      thanks, Brian
